OSMA Speaks Out Regarding Scope Changes in Trump Executive Order

On October 29, the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) joined the American Medical Association (AMA) and a coalition of numerous national and state medical and specialty societies to voice serious concerns about scope of practice changes in the Executive Order titled “Protecting and Improving Medicare for our Nation’s Seniors.”

Issued by President Trump on October 3, 2019, this Executive Order included a provision which the coalition found troubling: broad, vague language relating to the supervision and reimbursement of nonphysician professionals.

The coalition expressed concerns about the language requiring HHS to propose new regulations weakening or eliminating current supervision of nonphysician medical professionals in the Medicare program, as well as impacting reimbursement of these professionals, in a letter to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). The letter also emphasized the importance of the physician-led, team-based approach to care in order to ensure safe, high-quality patient treatment. The OSMA, AMA and allied groups have requested that the Administration decline to pursue certain language from the Executive Order which would impose sweeping changes to the Medicare program which run counter to the track record of team-based care.
