Free Training on Death Certificates for Disaster Situations
The Montgomery County Coroner's Office in Dayton Ohio is providing free grant-funded death certificate training to death certifiers, in order to have death certificates filled out as they relate to disaster situations.
Lessons learned from this training, prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with minor additions by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, will be compiled for best practices by the three awarded institutions to be applied in furthering the nation-wide training effort. A recently-conducted needs assessment indicated most death certifiers have not received formal training in the completion of death certificates, especially death certificates involving a natural, human-induced, or radiological/chemical disaster.
The training consists of the following topics:
- Reporting Demographic Information on Death Certificates
- Certifying Deaths Due to Natural Causes
- Guidance for Certification of Deaths in the Event of a Natural, Human-Induced, or Radiological/Chemical Disaster
The Ohio State Coroners Association has applied for Continuing Medical Education (CME) through the American Academy of Family Physicians. In addition, the Ohio State Coroners Association is able to offer Continuing Education Units for Ohio Coroners and Medical Examiners and Certificates of Attendance for attendees who are not Coroners and Medical Examiners in the State of Ohio.
The virtual training session opportunities will be conducted live via Zoom by Kent E. Harshbarger, M.D, J.D., M.B.A, Coroner, Montgomery County Ohio.

Advanced registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Participants are asked to complete the pre-training and post-training survey questions, otherwise we will not receive credit for your training towards the grant requirement. These questions should take less than 5 minutes of your time and are very important to the grant, which requires training 150 or more death certifiers.
The information collected from the surveys is intended to better understand the disaster-related death certification workforce, processes, and surveillance efforts, as well as to inform the planning and coordination of subsequent death certifier training sessions.
